In life there are two types of people: 1. Girls who love pillows 2. Boys and girls who love girls who love pillows. (You can probably guess which type I am—much to my husband’s chagrin). And Blissliving Home makes pillows that satisfy even pickiest of pillow connoisseurs, which is why I’m so thrilled to bring you this week’s giveaway! The kind people at Allmodern.com are offering one lucky reader the choice of any Blissliving Home pillow priced up to $65! Awesome, right? Here’s what the folks from Allmodern.com have to say about the Blissliving Home line…

200903270633.jpg

“Add a Dash of Style with Blissliving Home: The spring season marks the perfect time of year for a revitalizing change in our lives and there isn’t a better area to start than in a place where we spend most of our time: home. Given the fact that we are a little more cautious in our purchases during this time of year, this featured décor item couldn’t come at a better time as it not only gives our modern furniture the makeover it needs but it also falls within our budget. Often times it’s easy to feel stressed about how our space looks and we immediately think of uprooting our room’s style and starting from scratch which can be costly and overwhelming. Instead of tearing up the rug and placing ads for our old furniture online, use what you’ve got and bring out your room’s very best features with a decorative accent pillow from Blissliving Home.”

200903270634.jpg

“The collection from Blissliving Home combines fresh spring colors with simple, modern prints that are sure to add just the right amount of grace and style to any corner of your home. When furnishing a space with this collection, it’s important to step a bit out of your comfort zone and add the boldness of color, texture, or pattern that will really kick your home up to the designer level while maintaining the soothing comfort you enjoy. Choose from a variety of models that feature an organic print reminiscent of the springtime upon us as seen in the Crisanta Citron or a chic style that adds dimension to your space like the Society Rose Gold pillow. Blissliving Home uses only the finest of fabrics such as silks from India and China and intricate cotton jacquard from Italy to provide the very best accent piece for you to enjoy for years to come.”

You know the drill: just leave a comment on this post before next Thursday at midnight. Then wait with baited breath as I randomly select one reader to win their choice of any Blissliving Home pillow valued at up to $65! I’d suggest starting your shortlist now—there’s a seriously good selection. Below are some of my faves! Now pardon me while I go fluff the pillows on my couch…

Chairs of the World: The Egg Chair

March 26, 2009

hoetze julia bird.jpg

Welcome to another edition of Chairs of the World. Our subject today? The Egg Chair, a creature whose ubiquity in contemporary interiors rivals that of pigeons in Manhattan. Unlike the spry and nimble Wishbone Chair, the Egg Chair is clumsy and slow to action, and it therefore must rely on camouflage to evade capture. Come with me as we stalk its many permutations.

paulc22eggchair.png

Here we see the common brown Egg Chair. Though it may appear dull-witted, this individual has cleverly formed a symbiotic relationship with similarly shaped and hued ottoman—thereby confusing potential predators.

http--www.shootfactory.co.uk-img-PropID367_Big_99.jpg.tiff

The arctic Egg Chair develops a white coat as winter approaches. Though easy to spot in the early autumn…

hallie burton.png

…it is nearly invisible once the cold light of winter arrives. Isn’t nature wonderful?

rockstar.jpg

When angered or threatened, the Egg Chair will flush a brilliant shade of fuchsia as a warning to all who dare come near.

bessler983egg chair.png

This juvenile specimen has strategically placed a small pillow on his lap in hopes of blending with his surroundings. Clearly he has much to learn about the art of camouflage.

hallie burton 2.png

Perhaps he should take a cue from his older and wiser relative, who has not only shed his solid coat in favour of a pattern, but has also hidden behind the protective cover of foliage.

Much as a lizard’s body temperature fluctuates according to his surroundings, Egg Chairs in tropical regions have been known to develop fiery hides that mirror the hot climate of their habitats.

Though clearly past her reproductive prime, this grandmother Egg Chair has maintained her complex floral coat and practically disappears into the rug below her.

And finally, the most rare sighting of all: a pair of elusive metallic Egg Chairs. Once this couple mates, they will produce spectacularly shiny offspring!

A Little Obsessed: Suzanis

March 25, 2009

city sage suzani 1.jpg

Okay, so I know I’m about a million years late to the party on this one, but ever since my pillows arrived I can’t get enough of these gorgeous hand embroidered Uzbek textiles, aka Suzanis. I stalk them on eBay, I dream about filling my house with them. So what better way to get it out of my system than to design a couple rooms around them?

suzani city sage mid century living room.jpg

I love the idea of dressing up an otherwise neutral contemporary room by draping this breathtaking Suzani throw over the back of a simple modern couch. Keep accessories subtle in palette but rich in texture with a bentwood pendant, cowhide pillows, and an inlaid wood cabinet. Corral the knickknacks from your world travels with a decoupage paperweight and sleek shagreen tray.

200903250726.jpg

Or add a touch of global flair to a luxe-traditional workspace. Can you believe this stunning green and pink Suzani sold for only $24 on eBay? A glossy black desk and sweet pink boudoir chair make the perfect spot for penning invitations to that charity event you’re hosting. When you’re done, stow your stationery in laquered stacking boxes, then check your lipgloss in a scalloped mirror whose shape reflects the tapestry’s floral design. Don’t forget to switch off the lamp as you leave the room; your creepy-cool bird prints will keep watch while you’re away!

Tag! What’s Your Style?

March 24, 2009

city sage glam organic.jpg

Alek over at From the Right Bank to the Left Coast has started up a super fun game of tag. She challenged me to find one picture that sums up my style–easier said than done, believe me! But then I happened across this lovely vignette and it’s me in a nutshell!

This seating arrangement is epitome of a style that I’ve come to think of as ‘glamorganic‘; polished pieces such as the linen bergere and the starburst mirror play against earthy elements like the stark fireplace and the roughhewn plank floor. It’s a study in contrast: modern and antique, edgy and refined. Definitely the sensibility I try to cultivate in my home and in my life!

So I’m officially tagging Chelsea at {frolic!}, Cassandra at Coco + Kelly, Diana at Please Sir, R. at This Is Glamorous, Jo at A Cup of Jo, and Katy at Katy Elliot, but I encourage everyone to play along! What single image–interior, fashion or otherwise–best encapsulates your personal style?

Toys for Grownups: House Beautiful Image Library

March 24, 2009

city sage house beautiful.jpg

Like a kitten, I am very easily amused. And the searchable image library at the House Beautiful website is the human equivalent of a ball of string! It’s not perfect yet–they haven’t archived all of their images to date–but it’s pretty darn fun to play around with different search terms and see what you come up with. Looking for patio inspiration in time for summer? Hello, ‘Outdoor Rooms’!

city sage house beautiful2.jpg

Search by color, too. From baby to ballet to bubble gum, there’s plenty of pink to be had!

city sage house beautiful3.jpg

Or maybe your significant other needs convincing that a neutral palette in the living room won’t be too frou-frou. Just refine your search by color and by room type, and voila!

city sage house beautiful6.jpg

Switch up styles as well. The categories are somewhat arbitrary but I’m not going to quibble. Whether ‘New Traditional’ as above or ‘Modern’ as below, I’d happily rest my head in any of these bedrooms!

city sage house beautiful5.jpg

Last but not least, you can search by pattern! Explore florals and stripes galore, or perhaps you’d like to get your gingham on (hey, who am I to judge?).

city sage house beautiful4.jpg

So go chase your tail at the House Beautiful image library! Now if only all interiors magazine websites were this easy to navigate! Ahem, are you listening Marie Claire Maison?

Etsy is my Kryptonite

March 23, 2009

I seriously think there needs to be a 24 hour waiting period on items from Etsy. It’s entirely too easy to go on an impulse shopping spree! Amongst my recent scores: these breathtaking lustreware teacups from Sweetshorn Vintage. They’re now happily holding ranunculi on my hall table.

il_fullxfull.61408436.jpg

From Tiny Modernist, I bought the patterns to sew these cross stitch iconic chairs. I’ve always wanted a womb chair, and having a tiny one on my wall is a pretty good substitute. Thanks to Lynne at Tea for Joy for the find on these!

yeah hello rings city sage.jpg

The Bright Side Project recently featured the fabulous jewelry at Yeah Hello, and I just had to snap up these darling little rings. At less than $8 apiece, how could I not get a few different colors?

il_fullxfull.60742819.jpg

High Street Market is one of the most buzzed about vintage shops on Etsy, and you’ll see why once you peruse the incredible selection of tablewares and home accessories. This turquoise Royal Haeger platter is just begging me to host a cocktail party

Seller Dandee Designs is currently on maternity leave (congrats mom!) but I can’t wait till she gets back—her sweet stationery designs are right up my alley. I used this one for a recent engagement party I attended. Isn’t it adorable?

Tell me: what’s your shopping kryptonite?

Psst…I’m Canadian!

I’ve lived all over—most recently in New York and San Francisco—but I did most of my growing up in Toronto, and it’s still the city of my heart. So I was thrilled to share my top Toronto hotspots with Jo over at her Glamour blog Smitten! Because haven’t you always wanted to know the best place to buy a lucite bistro chair on your next trip to the Great White North?
