Tag! What’s Your Style?

March 24, 2009

city sage glam organic.jpg

Alek over at From the Right Bank to the Left Coast has started up a super fun game of tag. She challenged me to find one picture that sums up my style–easier said than done, believe me! But then I happened across this lovely vignette and it’s me in a nutshell!

This seating arrangement is epitome of a style that I’ve come to think of as ‘glamorganic‘; polished pieces such as the linen bergere and the starburst mirror play against earthy elements like the stark fireplace and the roughhewn plank floor. It’s a study in contrast: modern and antique, edgy and refined. Definitely the sensibility I try to cultivate in my home and in my life!

So I’m officially tagging Chelsea at {frolic!}, Cassandra at Coco + Kelly, Diana at Please Sir, R. at This Is Glamorous, Jo at A Cup of Jo, and Katy at Katy Elliot, but I encourage everyone to play along! What single image–interior, fashion or otherwise–best encapsulates your personal style?

Psst…I’m Canadian!

I’ve lived all over—most recently in New York and San Francisco—but I did most of my growing up in Toronto, and it’s still the city of my heart. So I was thrilled to share my top Toronto hotspots with Jo over at her Glamour blog Smitten! Because haven’t you always wanted to know the best place to buy a lucite bistro chair on your next trip to the Great White North?

My First Print Mention and A Whole Lotta Love

March 18, 2009

I awoke to the most wonderful surprise this morning. My blog heroine Anna over at Absolutely Beautiful Things was interviewed for Australia’s Madison Magazine and I’m beyond flattered that she included The City Sage in her list of must-reads! Anna and her beautiful blog are an inspiration to us all–she’s one of the reasons I started blogging!–and I can’t thank her enough for such an honor. So I thought I’d share my own ‘hit list’ of new (to me) blogs–after all, what good is love if you don’t spread it around?

You’ll adore the hip and humble vibe over at 2 days in the rain. It’s the perfect mix of fashion, interiors and art, all with a subtle indie undercurrent.

Visiting Jane at ill seen, ill said is like grabbing tea with your best friend–the one whose sharp wit, wry observations, and spot-on eye keep you on your toes. Plus I gotta give a shout out to a fellow Toronto girl!

Are you into pink, Ina, and street style? Do you have an outfit dedicated to flea market excursions? Yeah, me too. So I have a feeling that you’ll love F Is for Favorites just as much as I do.

My life would be so much easier–and dare I say better?–if the fashion genius behind Pretty.Little.World could just tell me what to wear every morning. Be sure to check out her fab vintage shop on Etsy too.

Whenever reality gets the better of me, I head over to Simply Natural for some R&R; it’s the blogland equivalent of a slow, deep breath. And it’s more proof that the Aussie design sensibility is spot on (as if we needed it!).

Thanks again to Anna and to all my readers and fellow bloggers alike! I cherish the inspiration you give me every day 🙂

Warm Fuzzies and Why I Blog

March 14, 2009

Some mornings I wake up and the thought of spending another minute at the computer makes me want to head right back to bed. But then I get a comment like the one I received on yesterday’s post:

“I’m so glad I found this blog, a friend sent this to me b/c I’m getting married next year and thanks to you I might have a DJ (fingers crossed), and I just booked Max Wanger to take the photos. Then I spent an hour on YOUR blog and loved it! Very inspirational. My boss hates me today. Thanks so much.”

Knowing that my little corner of the internet is helping to connect cool folks to all the awesome art and design talent out there makes even the dreariest of blog days worth it. Just don’t get fired ’cause of me, okay?

P.S. I tried emailing you Nina but it bounced back. But I always love to hear from everyone via email:!

Exclusive Sneak Peek: Mary Jo Matsumoto Fall ’09

March 10, 2009

city sage mary jo matsumoto.jpg

You know in the movies how they yell ‘Stop the presses!’ when something smashingly newsworthy happens? Intrepid girl reporter at your service, I am so having one of those moments! The fabulous Mary Jo at Trust Your Style has honored me with the privilege of giving you this exclusive look at her Fall 09 Mary Jo Matsumoto women’s couture line. A detail from a suit in the collection, the wool jacket and pants are lined with the upside down heart textile (!!!) she designed. The top is pink charmeuse, and the bowling bag is black calf and gray ultrasuede.

Um, drool?

Just in case your heart isn’t racing fast enough over this one, Tina over at Luphia Loves has another exclusive photo from Mary Jo’s line. And I have two words guaranteed to make you want to see it: Fur. Bolero.

‘Nuff said.

Wicked Cool Giveaway: Claflin, Thayer & Co.

March 9, 2009

Um, are these accessories not the coolest you’ve ever seen? They’re brought to you by Liz Thayer, the creative mind and nimble fingers behind Clafin, Thayer & Co. in Oakland, California. Liz is very kindly offering this fabulous pink and black cosmetics bag in her signature ‘Painted Ikat’ print—free to one lucky reader! You know the drill: pop over to her shop, leave a comment telling me your favourite item, and on Thursday night I’ll randomly select a winner.

I can’t get enough of these incredibly vivid patterns and colors, which Liz paints and sews by hand. The wee coin purses would be perfect for getting my handbag organized—no way would that vivid pink get lost in the seemingly bottomless depths of my purse! And these acid bright pillows would bring such fun personality to an otherwise neutral room.

Liz’s talents extend to the world of leather as well! She uses recycled materials from pre-loved leather clothing, so each item has that butter soft texture that only time and love can achieve. Check out the exposed zipper on this fabulous clutch; it adds the perfect touch of rocker edge to the bag’s clean and streamlined shape.

Liz also has an addictively stylish blog with her favourite fashion finds, the inspirations and processes behind her designs, and special sneak peeks of her works in progress (I want one of these shirts!). I absolutely adore this fierce studded pouch—though frankly they’re all stunning. Don’t you want to collect all four?

Don’t forget: leave a comment to be entered in the draw for one of Liz’s amazing hand painted cosmetics bags! It’s the perfect antidote to a post-daylight savings Monday 🙂

P.S. Congrats to Grace at Poetic Home on winning the Pink Lemonade necklace from last week’s JessLC giveaway. See the rest of the winners here, and even if you didn’t get lucky in the giveaway you can take advantage of JessLC‘s free shipping for the rest of the week!

P.P.S. Thanks a bunch to This Is Glamorous for randomly drawing me as the winner of these awesome earrings, and to Brooke at Velvet and Linen for selecting me to receive a copy of Swedish Interiors. I never win anything, so I’m feeling pretty special right now!

One to Watch: 100 Layer Cake

March 5, 2009

100 layer cake.png

Last summer, when I lived and breathed all things wedding, I was glued to my screen for the exquisitely stylish lead-up to the wedding of Kristina from Lovely Morning. So I was beyond thrilled to discover that as of last month, Kristina and a few of her friends have embarked upon an exciting new venture: 100 Layer Cake! They describe it as a ‘wedding planning resource for and by crafty, modern women’ but I can tell it’s going to be so much more.

A full site is on the way; for now you can head to their blog for fabulous entertaining tips (a spa party with homemade beauty potions and downloadable recipe cards!), gorgeous inspiration boards and color palettes, and generally fresh, cool, accessible ideas with a warm, clean contemporary aesthetic. I cannot wait to see what they come up with next—looks like I’ll be glued to my screen a while longer!

I am so excited about this one, I can barely contain myself. It’s the biggest giveaway in history, with not one but seven chances to win! I have the honor of presenting to you the Pink Lemonade Necklace, which honors Bright Pink–a national non-profit providing education and support to young women at high-risk for breast and ovarian cancer. Just leave me a comment between now and Thursday at midnight, either giving a shout-out to your dearest cause or telling me about a time that you turned life’s lemons into pink lemonade. The one you would have planned matching outfits with had you known each other in grade school? I’ve been fortunate to encounter several such wonderful ladies in blogland—and one of them is Chris Williams. She writes the fabulous blog ‘You Can Call Me Chris‘ and also makes the most ingenius paper creations under the label Christina Williams Designs.
