Book Review: ‘Found Style’ by Amy Butler

I adore Amy Butler for her fabulous fabrics. And I knew about her more recent book ‘Midwest Modern‘ but was pleasantly surprised to discover her earlier work ‘Found Style
‘. In testament to the staying power of Amy’s aesthetic–that blend of vintage and modern so lovingly cobbled together over a lifetime—the breathtaking photos in this book are over six years old but they look as fresh and contemporary as if they were taken yesterday.

In addition to sharing amazing interiors and still life shots, Amy and her co-author/husband David offer eloquent insight into their design philosophy. “Life is a process of continual discovery,” they write, “And our surroundings should bear witness to the search.” Beautifully said!

Amy also offers a set of ‘found style’ guidelines for achieving this look in our own homes. Tips such as ‘use restraint’ and ‘great style doesn’t happen overnight’ are not especially groundbreaking, but they serve as a gentle reminder to those of us who want our houses to be Perfect. Right. Now. (Not that I know anyone like that…)

Of course this book is worth buying for the eye candy alone. Serene office spaces, soothing bedrooms and bathrooms, cozy living rooms, and vibrant yet sophisticated children’s rooms: the images here barely scratch the surface of all the amazing inspiration to be had in ‘Found Style’!

The chapter on dining rooms is a party planner’s dream; my mind is swirling with the possibilities! Can’t you see a family gathering around this charming old farm table for a mother’s day brunch?

A rustic garden wedding would look gorgeous with mix and match vintage chairs and topiary centerpieces. And an outdoor chandelier provides the perfect refined touch!

Finally, what a stunning vignette to inspire a bridal shower, baby shower, or extra special birthday party! The softly romantic touches are just girly enough without going over the top.

Okay, so I got a little off track there towards the end. But great design should spark the imagination—and Amy Butler’s ‘Found Style’ has sent mine into overdrive! In other words, you have got to get your hands on a copy of this book!

For some reason, I thought Amy Butler’s style would be a lot younger, bright, chaotic, new and shiny. I’m so happy to see that it’s so much more grown-up, simple and they use a lot of vintage pieces. So wonderfully subtle yet lush. I’m putting that book on my list! 🙂 Thanks so much for sharing.

I’ve always thought that Amy Butler’s ‘look’ was very colourful and retro – think ’50s and ’60s. Perhaps it is now, but certainly not six years ago. I’ve got to get me this book! I’m off to put it on my wishlist.
